For many years, the main use of ferrets was for hunting, or �ferreting�. Their long, lean body and inquisitive nature made them the perfect choice for tunneling down holes and chasing rodents out of their burrows. By the early 1900s, ferrets were being imported by the tens of thousands in the United States because of their popularity as �vermin exterminators�. They were used to destroy rabbits, raccoons, gophers, rats and mice, and to protect barns, warehouses and granaries from these pests. It was such an accepted practice that the USDA promoted the use of ferrets for rodent control. Eventually, rodenticides became available and the fuzzies were out of a job.
Today, ferrets are simply kept as pets, enjoying the pampered life, and spending most of their day sleeping. Ah, that�s the life...
