Best. Gum. Ever.
Do you remember it? It was so tough to chew it made your jaw ache. And so packed with flavour because of the overload of sugar that you bounced off the walls for awhile after chewing a piece. Or ten. That was what the original Bazooka was like. Not the sissy stuff they sell these days.
I chewed so much of it as a child that Im surprised I have any teeth left.
Bazooka bubblegum was first marketed shortly after World War II in the U.S, and packaged in a red, white and blue colour scheme. In 1953, a small comic strip was included with the gum that featured the character Bazooka Joe. There were 50 different comics, and we collected them. Traded our doubles with friends.
Well, Bazooka Joe is history. In November 2012, it was announced that this comic would be replaced by brain-teasing puzzle wrappers in an attempt to modernize the brand. There went a piece of my childhood.
This was so popular back then with its distinctive flavour and packaging that a psychological study of tastes and smells that bring back memories found that one of the most frequently identified items was Bazooka Bubble Gum. Im not surprised.
Every year, when they start selling candy for Halloween (like now), goodies I loved getting in my trick or treat bag come to mind. Like this sugar-laden, jaw-busting gum. Kids these days dont know what theyre missing.
Were you a Bazooka bubblegum fan?
A beautiful weekend to all of you!
