Bikes and Sights: The Cataraqui Trail

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast
down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you,
and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.
- Ernest Hemingway -

As I sort through the images Ive taken in the past few months, there is no doubt that cycling was the highlight of the summer. And one of our favourite rides was on the Cataraqui Trail; a former Canadian National Railway line that covers a distance of 104 kilometres (64.6 miles). The steel rail and wooden ties were removed in 1989 and a gravel surface was added. It is now a year-round recreational trail for hikers, cyclists, equestrians, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers.

Here are a few photos from one of our days spent riding through part of the lovely Cataraqui Trail...

Most of our cycling was by the water, which made it that much more beautiful.

People were out and about enjoying a beautiful day.

Down below you can go for a swim if you're up to it.

This was one of my favourite sections on the trail. I fell in love with this rusty old bridge.

Of course, I had to take more photos of it.
Water, water everywhere. I was in heaven that day.

The most amazing man in the world waiting patiently while I take pictures.

Every now and then, I'd stop to help little creatures cross the road so they wouldn't get squished.
Some of you are thinking "ewwww", but they share this world with us and have as much right to be here.

Part of our ride was through forest areas. So wonderfully peaceful.

More water for water-loving souls. Like me.

We pulled over at one point to dip our tired feet in the cool water. Ahhhh... So refreshing!

Where there is water, there are fishermen...

And that's it for today. Thanks for riding along with us.

Wishing you all a fabulous Thursday!
